The XIXth Century, with its secret associations first and worker associations after, profound institutional changes and new social asymmetries caused by growing industrialisation, was an extremely difficult and demanding time for the forces of Public Security. This book, in discussing “The Italian Police in the second half of the nineteenth century” from a different institutional and memoir perspective, achieves a dual purpose: it concentrates on a particular space of time thus giving an accurate reconstruction of the operative and administrative aspects and, with important documents from officers of the time, it traces an interesting and mostly hitherto unpublished account of an entire segment of society.
